In 1938, with the rise of Hitler, Berlin, who was Jewish, and a first-generation European immigrant, felt it was time to revive it as a &#8220;peace song&#8221;, and it was introduced on the Armistice Eve broadcast of &#8216;The Kate Smith Hour&#8217; November 10, 1938. Kate Smith was the fist to sing it and this is a recording of that first ever public performance as broadcast on her CBS Radio show.<\/p>\n<p>Turn it up and listen. If you are like me, you may have to wipe a tear from your eye afterward. I have also included a version of the song that is a recreation of the radio debut in the 1943 movie, &#8216;This Is The Army&#8217; and you&#8217;ll see Ronald Reagan near the end.
