1951: Colgate Comedy Hour
Great shot! Notice turntable in the stage and how big the set is. In the early days, before the studios were consolidated, all the networks had theaters they shot in all over NYC and LA. This was in The Center Theater, across from NBC. Finally, a cameraman gets to actually sit on the swing out seat on the Panoram dolly. Usually, they had to climb all over it to see into the viewfinder and get their shots.
Mike: The convention center was known as the “New York Coliseum”. This was where all the auto shows were held until the Javits Center was built. The New York Coliseum occupied this location for about 50 years, making way for the current building on the site, the new Time Warner Center. CNN now has its New York facilities there.
Theater location is now the Time Warner Center. Great pix of the area in 1953-4 is in the Jack Lemmon/July Holliday/Peter Lawford movie IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU. Also good pix of inside a NY TV studio, too.
The blurred man in the center may be the occasional host, Broadway dancer Wayne Lamb
Could have been the Center Theatre in Rockefeller Center (with a turntable)?
