1936 & 2016…Convention Coverage Eerily Similar For NBC & CBS

Believe it or not, the Republicans held their convention in Cleveland in mid June of 1936, and the Democrats held theirs in Philadelphia in late July. Sound familiar?

In Cleveland, Alf Landon was the GOP candidate selected, and Franklin Roosevelt was the democrats choice in Philly. At the link is a very nice image of NBC Radio’s operational lay out of the 53 microphone setup in Cleveland for their Red and Blue Networks. Be sure to click on the image for a bigger-better look.

Below is a soon to be legend in reporting, Robert Trout, in Cleveland with a new CBS portable microwave unit with the antenna in the cane, and a wrist watch microphone.

    Here’s a picture of the late greats Charles Collingwood and Bob Trout on Friday November 22,1963 discussing about JFK assassination, Trout reflected on reporting the sudden death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt eighteen years earlier in 1945 for a similar CBS bulletin broadcast:) R.I.P Robert Trout(October 15,1909-November 24,2000).

    I last saw bob Trout at the DNC in 1996. He was in one studio and I was across the hall. His later memories on NPR were wonderful.

    Bob Trout was still a working reporter 45 years later. I previously only knew about him from pictures in a couple of books (one mentioned he started with CBS in 1932) until one very late night in November of 1981. I was watching an ABC newcast and they threw it to Bob Trout for a report about an art exhibit or somesuch somewhere in the middle east. I was amazed.
