July 17, 1955…Behind The Scenes With ABC At Disneyland Opening

This is the only place you can see this rare 14 minute video of ABC’s preparations for the 29 camera live remote, of the 90 minute opening ceremony show at Disneyland. 61 years ago today, what was then television’s largest remote took place at the Disneyland Grand Opening. Here is the behind the scenes film produced by ABC to commemorate the massive 29 camera, live broadcast.

The video above ends with the narrator saying “And here’s the show”. Below is the full 90 minute program, hosted by Art Linkletter, Walt Disney and many more famous faces.

    Watching this just reminds me of what wonderful things was accomplished when people worked together – because they had to.

    As I was watching both the ‘behind the scenes’ and the video itself, I started to wonder what it’d take if it had to be recreated, though I know that it would be ‘easier’ in some ways as there are wireless audio/video, drones and equipment upgrades, but if it were to be ‘live’ as it was here, how would it have been handled (outside of union issues)?

    Ah yes I remember the days of Turret Lenses and Plunger Zooms , Cameras that weighed more then a car, Cables that seemed like they were made of lead, CCUs that filled a room and generated more heat then a furnace. The days when Directors were barking mad and their heads spun around if they didn’t get the shot, but then again they were days of creativity and professionalism.

    “Operation Disneyland” is on the Walt Disney Treasures 2-DVD set “Disneyland: Secrets, Stories & Magic”, but that set is out of print and pretty expensive if you can find a copy.

    That’s a great look behind the scenes. I guess it’s a miracle it turned out as well as it did, considering the magnitude of the broadcast.

    …around 4:00 in to the film there is a TK-30 from KRCA with a large zoom lens ..could it be an Angieneux ? ..the What’s My Line broadcast with the cameramen, there is one TK-10 with the same zoom lens .. anyone know the brand of the lens ?

    Lucky for the crew they didn’t need TK 41 camera cable.
