TeleTales #107…The Way We Were; 1899

Before seeing at a distance, or tele-vision, was possible, there was a new thing called motion pictures, that was just as exciting a proposition. When film making began, the only way to get enough light was to shoot outdoors, even if the scene was taking place inside.

This photo shows the Lubin Studios rooftop location in Philadelphia in 1899. The Edison Studios had a similar arrangement in New Jersey, but their studio was mounted on a turntable and could follow the sun. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

    Edison’s “Black Maria” is still on display at the Edison National Park in NJ.

    Am finishing up a book about old Hollywood called ” Wings and Other Early Recollections of Hollywood”. Narrated by a silent screen star, Richard Arlen, who won first Oscar for best film of 1927. Put in story of Wings, the VIRGINIAN, and how early Hollywood looked and how Motion pictures began from his point of view. Manuscript was lost and then found. Interesting story. Will be out on Amazon in a few months.
