February 1, 1982…”Late Night” With David Letterman Debuts, NBC

Two videos for you to mark the 33rd Anniversary, first here are two rare promos that ran the weekend before the show debuted on a Monday night.

The second video below is from the second night on the air and Dave starts the show by letting an audience member take over one the the RCA TK44s in NBC Studio 6A.

After the camera clip, we get a minute with Pat Paulsen and the shows open is at the end. Bill Wendell is the announcer and Hal Gurney is directing. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

    I still have a Late Night sponge from when I was an audience participant in July 1982.

    This is when Dave was at his BEST. I had the Betamax (!) record every night with the intention of watching the show the next day or over the weekend. Nine times out of ten, I KEPT the show. Transferred many (but far too few) onto VHS when the Beta started it’s way out. Sadly, none of the VHS copies made it to DVD. Larry Bud Melman at Grand Central Station welcoming people as they got off the bus, Larry Bud handing out cartons of cigarettes in Times Square on the first day of Spring, ‘the Phil Donohue countdown calendar’, ‘the guy under the seats’, ‘the Bookmobile Lady’….I could go on and on. Funny, fun stuff. (And his MORNING show was fun, too…David Letterman with Edwin Neuman doing the news!).
