TeleTales #27…Ted Koppel At ABC Washington

Did you know he was born in England and was 13 when his family moved to the US? Koppel had a brief stint as a teacher before being hired as a copyboy at WMCA Radio in New York. In June 1963, he became the youngest correspondent ever hired by ABC Radio News, working on the daily Flair Reports program.

In 1966, Koppel worked for ABC Television as a war correspondent during the Vietnam War. He returned in 1968 to cover the campaign of Richard Nixon, before becoming Hong Kong bureau chief, and US State Department correspondent.

I think this picture is from the early 80s. The camera is an Ikegami HK 312 E model. The big bulge on the side is the new Triax adapter. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

    Peter Jennings (RIP), Ted Koppel, Sam Donaldson, and Charles Gibson were all great reporter-anchors at ABC.

    A true professional “through and through.” His warnings about television, like Ed Murrow’s, get more true each day, that actual programming is an interruption of the commercials and any quality broadcast is merely a collateral by-product of its profitability!

    Yes….thats the Ikegami 312….first camera with auto setup…the end of ” pot twirling” for the video ops!

    Hello I am curious to know what kind of prompter was this used. I see alot of the older camera’s especially the tk45’s in the early and late 80’s with this type of prompter.

    I was proud to work for a ABC affiliate from 1981 to 1997. Started watching Ted and Peter. Course it was a given for me in my house we had always watched ABC News before I went to work in TV. Those were some good years. But in 2001 it all changed and not for the good

    It was a shame after Ted Koppel left Nightline, as he warned about Television programming. Not too long after, ABC flipped Nightline to air after Jimmy Kimmel Live. When was the last time Nightline made a significant headline for the morning shows?
