RARE VIDEO! RCA TKP 45 Color Portable Camera Introduction

RARE VIDEO! RCA TKP 45 Color Portable Camera Introduction

Our thanks to James Murphy Tinsley for finding this great RCA clip from 1974. Not only do we see the intro of their new portable color production camera, but near the end, we see a prototype of the famous RCA TK76 ENG camera. It looks nothing like the finished product.

In today’s next post, we’ll get into the history of portable color.

  1. This is our friend, Lou Bazin…a top RCA Broadcast engineer who lead this TKP 45 project. Lou was one of the main engineers on the TK44 development and is one of two RCA men that accepted a secret invitation to meet with the American company that made Plumbicon tubes for Philips which led to big advances on the TK44.

  2. Love this promo. The TK-76 seen here is certainly not the one I used in the early 1980s. To this day, I feel the TK-76 produced the best looking video until the advent of DTV. But it was not ENG friendly, especially when connected to an Ampex “portable” 2″ recorder.

  3. I used this camera many times. It was like having a studio camera on your shoulder but the belt pack on your back kept the cable out of the way and kept you from tipping over forward. 😉
