‘I’ve Got A Secret’ November 1959…
At the 6 minute mark, Garry Moore call in cameraman Cass Gaylord to get close ups of the first Optical Character Reader which was invented by David Shepard. There are several shots of the RCA TK30 in the clip and the demonstration is interesting too.

somebody should ask Henry Morgan if he brought enough gum for everyone. (UPDATE) Just read Rick’s post of David H. Shepard….what a genius he was! We need more like him.
…IGAS also had such people as Philo Farnsworth, the creator of electronic television and Pete Best, former Beatles drummer ..I wish Game Show Network would show more of these classic kinescopes as regular programming ..what was really cool was viewing the first Let’s Make A Deal from NBC !

What I find interesting is that the OCR programs of the late 80’s were extremely unreliable. I figured this was because they were “new”. They had trouble reading different style fonts. Like in the video, it was set to all caps.
IGAS also demonstrated the first laser by Bell Labs, and as a kid I watched that episode. It was rigged to transmit the TV studio picture, and Moore could then show how he could block the video with his hand to prove its operation.
