3D Rigs…A Relic Already? PLEASE HELP US FILL IN THE BLANKS!
I got an email from our friend Chuck Pharis last night that said all the 3D trucks at ESPN are gone now. It seems that an engineer in India has come up with a box that converts any HD signal into 3D! I hope this is not an April Fool’s joke on me, but, if anyone heard about this, please let us know by adding a comment below. Thanks!

3D rigs look so small and simple to set-up and use; hard to imagine they would ever be replaced by some kind of software in a little box……….. :$

I was going to say that it was a converted Indian take-away meal box. I often see things in 3D after eating chicken rogan josh.
Actually, Teranex had a passable to good 2D to 3D converter in their VC100 product. Don’t know if Black Magic Design kept it in their version of the Teranex product.
In our industry 3D means 3Dead Dead Dead
I heard this from an ESPN Ops Producer a few days ago. I do not have any information on the converter box or where this is going. Does anyone have any accurate information on this?
3D by software sucks.

Just think Bobby, if this is true, you might be able to buy that 3D camera on eBay in a few weeks and add it to your collection!

Lots of big Hollywood movies are shot 2-Dee and then rendered into 3-Dee. There are some shots that a two camera rig can just not do and have it come out looking right.
I read either in Broadcast Engineering or in SportsVideoGroup publications that ESPN was doing a test of 2D to 3D. All conversion was being done back in Bristol. This was a demo test to see if it could be accomplished. If so – it could be a game changer.
3d hear is dead . Did hear of some type of converter . Will see what’s new in Augusta.

Maybe I’m a traditionalist but give me stereo-camera 3D any day.
The only other thing I could think of was that 3D gimmick in the late 1980s with special glasses one wore with one lens in it a neutral density filter. The whole trick there at that Super Bowl half time show was to keep the camera moving.
The television sets certainly are.
Augusta will be ESPN’s Last true stereo production for a while! They are testing a 2D to 3D converter on Soccer!if the tests are favorable ESPN says they will convert as many shows as possible to raise the amount of programming on their 3D network! At the moment there are plans to do a number of one off stereo 3D broadcasts. at this point just about any 3G 2D truck is capable of making 3D with some programming changes to switcher and router outputs! @Vince 3D is not dead it will never die! Hollywood is releasing upwards of 70 3D movies this year and the number grows next year, 3D episodic series will be available this season starting in September SKye will produce its F-1 Series in 3D The Chinese just had 3 brand new 3D mobile trucks delivered for CCTV’s over the air 24 hour a day 3D network. there is actual viewer ship of 3D in this world the problem is no one in the US knows how to market it or exactly what to do with it. At this time it is very difficult to buy a new HD TV with out it being either 3D or Internet capable! 3D is actually doing quite well in Military Medical and Advertising applications! My personal opinion is that as Glasses less 3D sets appear in the US the product will have a much easier time of selling itself! That is its biggest drawback Until you are willing to experience 3D TV you just dont know how good it really is! Everyone says 4K and SHD ar right around the corner! No broadcaster in their right mind is going to go out and rebuild their entire infrastructure to accommodate 4K or SHD with out a guaranteed return! Set manufacturers have even said that Affordable 4k sets are at least 10 years away where as Affordable glasses less 3D is less than 2 years away! ive got more for any one who will listen! but would I say RIP 3D? Not quite yet!
