I was always thrilled whenever there was a shot of the studio, and I remember that huge round support column halfway up audience center. They have since removed it, as it’s no longer there in 6B.

The fish eye lens makes the audience appear farther away than they really were.
The woman is Jaye P. Morgan
or Jane Fonda. The haircuts are idential!
@ Glenn Mack : I believe the column is still there. Only now the audience is pushed forward so it’s now on the top deck only further back, relatively. And It’s black or a dark color.
She does look like Jane Fonda. The reason I know it’s Jaye P.Morgan is because I remember the original TV Guide article in 1971.
@Geoffrey DeVoe. You may be right. It may be behind that back wall. It seems there were more seats for The Tonight Show than for Jimmy Fallon.
The linear-space saving band in front of the audience arrangement would return, of course, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
