Interesting little clip about how a Neumann U87 microphone is manufactured. Pretty fiddly, with a ton of hand labor – no wonder they’re so freaking expensive!
I once got to hold an early-’60s Telefunken ELA M 251, worth about $20,000. It nearly was a religious experience.
My everyday voice mic now is a vintage RCA BK-1A “ice cream cone.” I know it was the ubiquitous TV mic of the 1950s and ’60s, but when you mount it on a boom with a pop filter, dial the EQ in right and work it closely, it sounds very, VERY good for voiceovers.
The Neumann is great for music, but my favorite for voice is the Sennheiser 421.
