The cold opening is almost always done on the “tongue” at home base.
When I get people in to th show I always tell them: watch the stage crew ballet. On show night there is easily a collective millennium of experience on just the studio floor alone…

I saw those last two stagehands when they went live after the intros, and I wondered what they were doing. Now I know. Wow!
I’ve always said the best way to see SNl, if you can, is in the live audience. These Stage Hands deserve an Emmy!
