Behind The Scenes at THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW, Part 7 (of 7)
SPECIAL COLOR BONUS PAGE: Before October 31, 1965…the day CBS Studio 50 was color capable via their new Norelco PC71 cameras, Sullivan’s show had been broacast in color only a handful of times and all but one of those color shows had originated at CBS Television City in Hollywood.
This is the one time that the show was done in color from NYC before October of ’65. It was 1954 and the show was still called TOAST OF THE TOWN when, for a week in the late summer, CBS Color Studio 72 became the stage for that week’s live show. Studio 72 was CBS’s only color studio on the east coast and was equipped with RCA TK41 cameras. Here are some still shots of that weeks rehearsals, BUT ALSO, an amazing 14 minutes of color film that captures the event. Click the special box below to see it.

This TK41 Is A Killer! About 10 days ago, I posted a TK41 from MGM’s prop department asking you if it was “Live Or Memorex”. Thanks to our friend Mike Clark, we can see that camera in action shooting more than just pictures! For an episode of ‘The Girl From U.N.C.L.E,’ guest star Peggy Lee […]
The Final Four…Behind The Scenes With CBS & Turner http://sportsvideo.org/main/blog/2014/04/live-from-final-four-cbs-turner-a-happy-family-in-massive-three-pronged-production/ A total of 17 cameras fill the inside of AT&T Stadium to cover just the game action, with another 13 are in place to capture two separate on-site studio sets. Included in that arsenal are slash cameras in the lower left and right corners of […]
‘The Price Is Right’…Come On Down! Late last year, we discovered that the cameras in CBS Television City Studio 33 are now wireless…no more cables there. An interesting experiment that seems to be working. This photo, sent by our friend David Mackey, shows Drew Carey’s ‘Dancing With The Stars’ professional dance partner Cheryl Burke as […]
You’ve Come A Long Way Baby… With the 1960 election piece just posted, this photo of a stagehand changing the tote board numbers by hand popped into my head. These photos are from ABC’s 1952 election coverage which was pretty much a landslide for Dwight Eisenhower over Adlai Stevenson. This year computers would play a […]
