First Grammy Telecast: 1971 on ABC
Although the Grammy Awards began in 1958, it took an unbelievable 13 years for the show to come to television. ABC broadcast the first two, but since, CBS has had the show. Andy Williams was the host and presenters even included John Wayne. Below, ABC’s promo for the event.

That’s pretty good sound pickup for a pair of Sony ECM 51s, but The Fifth Dimension provided plenty of SPL.
For a few years NARAS did sponsor a show with performances by the Grammy winners called “The Best on Record.” With the popularity of awards shows, I have no idea why they used this format instead of actually showing the awards show.
