Picture Parade #2…A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Oz
A few weeks back, I watched ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ for the umteenth time on TCM. It’s still a fascinating spectacle…especially for those of us who grew up watching it on black and white sets and never knew till much later that most of it was in color. Here’s one of the huge Technicolor cameras shooting Margret Hamilton atop a house, just before she disappears in a beautiful orange smoke cloud. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee
My mother once produced a radio interview with Jack Haley, and while setting up she remarked to him about how brilliant the colors were in the movie. He thanked her for noticing, and told her about how they used much more light than was common even for Technicolor, and it was hotter than hell in that tin man suit and makeup.

I miss the days when it was on CBS. That was a yearly event that my entire family would drop everything for.

I met Margaret Hamilton in 1974. She was in the stage play “A Little Night Music” with Jean Simmons in Chicago. A bunch of small children waited outside the stage door for about a half hour as did I.
Only to take one step back with every step she took toward them, when she finally came out carrying shopping bags. It was surreal.
You gotta figure her life was like that for 40 years after Oz.

A timeless masterwork!
I should take this opportunity to say, I had low expectations regarding the Bluray 3D release of Oz, considering it was a conversion. But, it is amazing. Incredibly well done, and beautifully restored.
