TeleTales #94…”Family Feud”, ABC Hollywood
From Donna Quante, who used to operate one of the two Chapman Sidewinders in this picture, here is a shot of the studio with Gene Wood doing the audience warm up at the lower right.
This show used five Ikegami cameras, and all the operators wore jackets and sweaters daily, because Richard Dawson insisted the studio be cold enough to hang meet. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee
nice shot from the audience I guess people loved the end of the show when the audience stage manger I don’t know about producers clapping along to the theme at the end of the show what year did that start and who started that the rhythmic clapping
I did the stage left sldewinder camera #5…the atmosphere was always a little uptight, but Richard and I seemed to get along ok……
I still have my “Feud Sweater” . It’s a little tight now! I think it shrunk……
Just picked up the prototype for the Harris TC85 tonight with full bench documentation and a never released Canon Lens. Doing the Happy Dance!. Two other lenses included.
Until we went HD in the late 90s, I used 323Ps working with NASA. Loved the Ikies.
This takes me way back. I did the pilot of Family Feud
I called OSHA on them once. The person on the phone asked if anyone had gotten hurt. I said, you mean someone has to get pneumonia before you can do something. We’re running cameras in winter coats, hats and gloves and it’s 90 degrees outside. Said she didn’t think they could do much. But, within a half hour a whole lot of ABC suits were on the stage. The temperature went up for quite a few months after that, but gradually worked it’s way down again.
Bud Holland who normally ran C-1 on the left side of the stage, taped a Penguin to the top front of his lens. Richard Dawson saw it and made him take it off. Bud was wearing his Lake Placid Winter Olympic coat while running the camera. We thought it was funny, Richard did not!
I remember one hot summer day a group came in and some sitting in the front few rows had on shorts. It was so cold in the studio that they complained. The Producer sat at a table in the left front row. He told them he could not make it warmer. Almost everyone got up and left between shows. Then the Pages had to almost force people from the back rows to fill those seats for the next show. Most of the stage crew wore winter coats everyday. Even in the summer! I survived part of 6 years of this show but was llucky to work in the Video room upstairs.
I did a few shows and it was cold.

Why did insist on the studio be this cold.

It was so cold the Pages that sat behind the game board had to be given blankets to say warm.
How cold was it? The crew members wore their insulated parkas from the Lake Placid and Sarajevo Winter Olympics while working on the show.
Is that ABC Page up on the stage trying to stay warm? I remember how cold it was back there.
