Come Play Along With A Special Episode Of “To Tell The Truth”

Can you guess which one is the real Ken Whalen? I’ve read his book and I couldn’t guess, so play along, and there is a surprise for Gary Moore at the end.

Ken was a director and associate director in the Golden Age and worked with Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Red Buttons, Gary Moore, Perry Como and lot of early game shows like “Strike It Rich” and many more.

His book “How the Golden Age of Television Turned My Hair to Silver: The Mad Memories of an Ex-Television Director”, is a must read. It is loaded with behind the scenes memories, bloopers and very interesting stories of live television in the 1950s.

    You know why these shows were so good, why they stay in our memories and form that wonderful social/cultural matrix which is our shared heritage? It is because they featured people, real people who had education, who were formed by their milieu, who shared worked experiences that went from the stage, to radio to TV to film – look how polished and presentable and well-spoken even the false “Kens” were. When we bemoan the state of daytime TV, we have good reason. Thank you for posting, Bobby.

    Great book! I read it as a kid. I recall him being asked to call down to Telecine to have the Telop ready on his first day. He jumped on the intercom & asked for an Italian man named Telly.
