One Of A Kind In Every Way…Shooting ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ Open
Yesterday was the first time I had seen this rare shot and wanted to share it with you. It is the only one I have ever seen of the title sequence of the show being filmed. I can hear the theme playing now.
In case you have never heard the lyrics to “The Fishin Hole”, here is Andy singing them. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

whistling comes to mind immediately
Now that I’m looking closer… definitely looks like one is in front of the right reflector. You can see the film box that would sit on top of the camera
Hahaha….. All of us film ‘n video geeks did the same thing… where’s the camera??? LOL
One angle.. Directly behind the stump. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lli9ABUFZCU
Great — now I’ll be whistling that darn tune all day. What a neat piece of history Dave.
The location is Franklin Canyon, which to my amazement is a short distance from the Beverly Hills Hotel. The trail and lake are still there.
That photo is also in my Mayberry Memories book. I bought the book about eleven years ago and I think it may be out-of-print! It’s an awesome photo too. Even tho book is awesome!
Did Opie go to BHHS? Great photo and thx for sharing it!
I just love the show. I record them from TV but can’t keep them. Thank You so much for _hat I’ve seen here today….
Wow! That is really cool. Wish I had a time machine.
Notice it took 13 people to film this scene!
So cool!!
Who knew
For those of us of the generation that watched these shows, this is as foundational for our TV show experience as anything I’ve seen.
Great photo.
Behind every scene is … some guy without his shirt on.
That’s a cool picture! They don’t make shows like that anymore. I still watch the Andy Griffth show every day! I never get tired of it! Andy Griffth, Don Knotts, Bea Bavier R.I.P.! Ron Howard, keep making great movies!
Famous quote on the show: “You ain’t seen the last of Ernest T. Bass!” 🙂
Grew up with Oppie
Love this!
I’ve been up there in 2009 looking for the exact spots where the entire TV opening was shot at. With a SUV, I dislike driving up steep hills and once I got to the spot where they walked and to the late, my truck almost didn’t go thru because of how narrow it was…and to avoid not hitting any of the joggers… Nevertheless, I parked and videotaped the place they would walk and to the lake.
This seriously made my day. I love this show.
I’m going to mesmerise this tune!
What I never saw before YouTube was the full opening, in which Opie’s rock skipping in the water dissolved into the sponsor tag.
Those were the days.
