This was a January 1956 storm that hit the California coast with huge waves. The surfers may have loved it, but KTLA lost a camera covering the event…don’t know if it was this one or another, but this cameraman is about to get a big surprise. Thanks to David Zoning fro the pix. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

Here’s Where The Historic Sullivan Cameras Retired To… https://eyesofageneration.com/where-the-ed-sullivan-beatles-cameras-finally-wound-up/ At the link above, you can read the whole story on the Gallery page of my main website. CBS was very good about donating outdated equipment to colleges and religious broadcasters. Occasionally, public broadcasting stations got some help too, like WCNY in Syracuse NY, which signed […]

Set Your DVR Now…Barbra Streisand Returns To ‘Tonight’, 51 Years Later! Just two weeks ago, I posted her first ever network appearance on ‘Tonight With Jack Paar’, with Orson Bean as a guest host. That was in 1961. Her next appearance on ‘Tonight’ was during the guest host period between Paar and Carson with Groucho […]

Speaking Of ‘Star Trek’…. On this 48th anniversary of the series debut, here’s an idea of just how wildly popular the show was. Mad Magazine did a parody! Our friend Dick DeBartolo wrote “Star Blecch” for Mad’s December ’67 issue and here is Shatner and Nimoy reading it on location. Dick’s story was beautifully illustrated […]

The Masters Of Stage Craft Magic…IATSE Local 1, New York City Before videotape came along in 1956, live television was very dependent on skilled stage hands to move scenery in and out during the broadcasts of everything from comedies like “Your Show Of Shows” to dramatic anthologies like “The Kraft Playhouse”, and all the rest. “Well, that’s a few grand washed away!” ๐
Ok rookie. It’s your first day here. Let me give you a piece of advice. What ever you do, don’t get the camera wet!!!
I wonder if this will void the RCA warranty?
Just stay out there a little while longer… the heavy stuffs not supposed to come down for at least another hour…
“I’m John Cameron Swayze, and my Timex is STILL ticking.”
“Hold that shot!”
“Camera 1… Push in… Push in!!! Tighter…. Tighter!!! Camera 1???”
“Let’s see if a TK-30 is water proof.”
“Camera 2, just in case make sure you have on rubber soled shoes.”
The one thing Bill hated about sporting events was when they did the wave near him.
Cue the wave!
“This raincoat should keep me plenty dry and warm.”
Little chance of the TK30 overheating.
I’m sure the water cooled off the tubes LOL ๐
Those RCA IOs didn’t take well to being drenched…
Go wide!
#3 A drenched Bill Stout not to happy w/being up close and personal.
#2 This huge wave comes in and almost drowns the pair.
#1 Here’s a series of off screen photos of KTLA reporter Bill Stout interviewing a resident in the South Bay area of L.A. during extremely high waves pounding the coast in 1963
“Oh shit!”
Thanks should actually go to Kenneth McIntyre who originally posted it to his Photos Of Los Angeles page with the accompanying caption from the original photo:
Violent winds, high waves and the highest tide of the season combined to give the Southern California coastline from Santa Barbara to San Diego its worst battering of the year on January 16, 1953. A towering wave is seen blasting a Redondo Beach building, in front of a KTLA television camera. Another KTLA camera, valued at $13,000, was damaged.
“Looks like you got a few water spots on your lens. Clean your lens.”
IO drown….or is that big hose to give it water
